What permissions are needed for WMI based collections?
Longitude collects data on Windows applications through WMI, and the account used by the Statistics Server Service contains the permissions needed for the WMI collections. To collect WMI data, the Statistics Server account needs to have Local Administrator permissions on the Windows computer it's connecting to. In order to change the account used by the Statistics Server, change the account used by the service in the Windows services applet, and restart the service.
Longitude Statistics Server Account Permissions and Access Denied Error Messages for WMI Collections
WMI based collections require Local Administrator privileges on the target server. The Longitude Statistics Server Agent uses the permissions assigned to its service account to access WMI.
The following list displays the types of accounts that can be used to give the Statistics Server sufficient permissions to collect WMI data:
- Domain account that is a member of the Local Administrator group on the target server.
- Domain account that is a member of the Domain Administrator group, and will be a Local Administrator member on all domain servers by default.
Account information needed during Longitude installation
When you install a Longitude Management Console, you will be asked for two separate accounts: a user account internal to Longitude, and a Windows service account for the Statistics Server to use.
The internal Longitude account will be the account that you use to log in to Longitude the first time you access it, and will also be used as the Longitude database administrator account. Please keep note of the username and password you create for this account, since it will be used if you need to restore Longitude from backup. The username and password for this account should not be changed.
What is a Longitude agent?
A component on the Longitude Management Console called the Statistics Server will collect data from monitored devices without installing any additional software (i.e. agents) on the monitored devices. However, the Statistics Server has some limitations:
- For WMI collections, it is restricted to the credentials of the account the Statistics Server runs under
- Firewalls may restrict which devices and protocols can be accessed by the Statistics Server
- Slow links between sites may cause data collection to time out
kb86: Problems monitoring external servers
Problems monitoring external servers can be related to Domain security or firewall issues. Installing a Longitude Agent at the remote site will allow you to specify an account with different permissions for WMI collections, and will use specified ports through a firewall.
Longitude agents use the following ports:
- 7220 (TCP), for data collection
- 7223 (TCP), for data collection if using SSL
- 7229 (TCP), for upgrades
