kb48: VMware memory monitoring
Most VMware statistics are collected via SNMP using the VMware Resources MIB. However, Longitude parses Memory metrics directly from /proc/vmwware/mem on the ESX LINUX host. This data is a more accurate reflection of memory usage than the memory data maintained under the Resources MIB.
What does Longitude monitor?
Longitude has out-of-the-box solutions to monitor the following:
- Operating Systems
- Windows
- Solaris
- AIX
- HP-UX
- Linux
- Network Appliances
- Cisco Routers
- Any router that conforms to RFC1213
- Any switch that conforms to RFC1213
- Infrastructure
- Active Directory
- Citrix
- DHCP
- IBM Director
- Dell OpenManage
- HP InsightMgr
- Syslog
Can only see reporting on first defined VMware server in Web 2.0 interface, Advanced interface is fine.
Hi -
We recently added 2 VMware servers for OS monitoring by Longitude. I noticed that reports are only selecting the VMWare environment that was defined to Longitude for reports in the WEB 2.0 interface. I can select either VMWare environment for Application reports under the Advanced interface. Both computers are generating VMware events. Reports for Window and UNIX OS applications select all the defined computers then allow drill down capabilities.
Am I missing something?
Thanks
SNMP Trap Configurations
Has anyone configured VMWARE VCenter servers to send SNMP Traps to Longitude -
The VMWare instructions are as follows:
Configure SNMP Settings
You can configure up to four receivers to receive SNMP traps from vCenter Server. For each receiver, specify a host name, port, and community.
Prerequisites
To configure SNMP settings, the vSphere Client must be connected to a vCenter Server system.
Required privilege: Global.Settings
Procedure
1 If necessary, select Administration > vCenter Server Settings to display the vCenter Server Settings dialog box.
7.1 : In the 2.0 UI, when trying to set up an Event for Unix Network not all Events are listed .
When trying to configure an Event for Unix Network there are only four options available:
• HighNetworkInputErrors
• HighNetworkInputPackets
• HighNetworkOutputErrors
• NetworkCollisions
The HighNetworkOutputPackets is missing. To correct this issue follow the steps below:
- Download the index-all.js file
- Navigate to \Longitude\tomcat\webapps\webui\web2.0\javascripts and rename the current index-all.js file to index-all.old and save the new file to this location
7.1: Unable to apply an action for Unix -> Filesystem when specific time restrictions are set in the Web 2.0 interface.
When trying to create an action for a Unix Filesystem event with a time restriction in the Web 2.0 interface, an error message stating “Error retrieving action:”appears. To correct this issue follow the steps listed below:
- Download the firenze-web2.jar file
- Stop the webui service.
- Navigate to \Longitude\tomcat\webapps\webui\WEB-INF\lib and rename the current firenze-web2.jar file to firenze-web2.old and save the new file to this location
7.1: In the 2.0 UI in the SLA configuration, unable to add a computer for a Transaction other than Ping.
If you try to create a SLA and add a computer for a Transaction other than Ping it does not give you the list of computers to select:
Please follow the steps below, this will then give you the option to select the appropiate computers and instances.
- Download the index-all.js file
- Go to Longitude\tomcat\webapps\webui\web2.0\javascripts and rename the existing file to index-all.js to index-all.orig and save the new file to this location
Detailed SQL server report problem
If I am viewing a detailed report for SQL2008, such as the Buffer Cache Detail for SERVERXYZ and on the left hand bar click on another server and then click run, it switches to that server. However, if that server has a named instance, that named instance is not carried over to the report parameters and I receive a "There is no data currently available for some of your charts or tables." In the header, I see the instance is still default.
SNMP headache
Well,
we have it up and running. But how get I useful info from this (please see attached file)? Guess I have to use SNMP studio (great video, Susan!), but where can I find it? No link on the Desktop, no link in Longitude... and I've found it.
Unfortunately SNMP studio can't make a connection to the longitude DB, which ist located on the very same server and a test connection to the SNMP device failed:
Console output
Saving properties.
Error creating new element.
