kb48: VMware memory monitoring
Most VMware statistics are collected via SNMP using the VMware Resources MIB. However, Longitude parses Memory metrics directly from /proc/vmwware/mem on the ESX LINUX host. This data is a more accurate reflection of memory usage than the memory data maintained under the Resources MIB.

Freeware/Shareware vs. Commercial Monitoring Technology what’s an IT person to do?
OK so we all know that IT budgets have been constrained (although things are admittedly getting better), with hardware/software refreshes and the strong push to virtualization there is only some much budget available. One solution had been to simply find software that is no cost/low cost. It is an easy decision right? No budget, no problem, just use technology that doesn’t require any capital outlay.
