kb99: Registration of Exchange TrackingLog collection fails

By csmith - Posted on 16 November 2009

Exchange TrackingLog collections can fail for the following reasons:

  • The IP address of the Exchange server is specified rather than the computer name. In this case, edit the LogDirectoryPath application property to use the computer name rather than the IP address.
  • The previous day's Exchange Tracking logs are not present. The registration checks for the previous day's files - if they are not present, the registration of the TrackingLog component will fail. In this case, wait a day and re-test the TrackingLog collection.
  • Message tracking is not enabled. To enable Message tracking, do the following:
    1. Open Exchange System Manager.
    2. Select “Servers” under the domain name.
    3. Select the Exchange Server you're configuring, right-click on the Server, and select “Properties.”
    4. On the Properties screen, “General” tab, there will be an “Enable message tracking” checkbox.
    5. Enable message tracking by clicking the checkbox on.
