Single Pane of Glass for VMware monitoring - coming soon in Longitude 6.3
Most IT organizations we speak with nowadays are engaged in some sort of virtualization initiative, and a common request we hear from them is for a “single pane of glass” monitoring view. The concept has been around for awhile, but is growing in importance. Why? The well being of the entire IT environment is highly dependent on the health of the virtualized infrastructure, so virtualization itself can’t be managed or viewed as an island unto itself. What happens at the virtualized level has a cascading affect throughout the entire IT ecosystem.
This need for a “single pane of glass” view is driving the implementation of technologies that can monitor a broad set of IT infrastructure components as well as the applications themselves. Organizationally, this is creating a convergence of IT resources to manage “services” rather than the IT silos themselves (virtualization, network, applications etc.) .
One of the linchpins of the upcoming Longitude release is a tighter, more comprehensive integration with VMware V4. The additional VMWare alerting and reporting capabilities allow for a quick and easy configuration of alerts, problem escalation, and the reporting of performance and operational problems.
Longitude V6.3 brings a number of capabilities to the table to support the “single pane of glass” monitoring view:
- baselining of VMWare related KPIs for guidance as to appropriate alerting
- better visibility into the performance of VMware environments with a large number of hosts and guests
- correlation of the performance of the virtualized environment and the applications being supported
