What is a Longitude agent?
A component on the Longitude Management Console called the Statistics Server will collect data from monitored devices without installing any additional software (i.e. agents) on the monitored devices. However, the Statistics Server has some limitations:
- For WMI collections, it is restricted to the credentials of the account the Statistics Server runs under
- Firewalls may restrict which devices and protocols can be accessed by the Statistics Server
- Slow links between sites may cause data collection to time out
- You may want to specify the location where the data is collected from to test connectivity over a specific route
- You may want to spread the load of data collection over multiple server
You can use a Longitude agent to address any of the situations listed above. There is no additional charge for an agent installation. The Longitude agent installation can be run from a smaller agent installation kit, or by selecting the "Agent" option in the Management Console installation kit.
The recommended minimum configuration for an agent is:
- Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2008 Server
- Red Hat Linux 9, Red Hat Linux ES 3.0, Red Hat Linux AS 4.0, Red Hat Linux ES 4.0, Red Hat Linux EL 5.0, Suse Linux 9, Suse Linux 10.0 *Please Note* Linux agents will not be able to collect WMI data.
- The Longitude Agent is also not supported on Suse Linux servers where 64 bit extensions have been installed
- 2.4GHz P4 or Xeon processor
- 512 MB Main memory
- 100 MB Ethernet Adapter
- 60 - 95 MB, depending on installed collectors
The 7.0 Longitude agent kit can be downloaded from the following article, 7.0 Agent Kit
After the Longitude agent is installed, you can monitor managed devices using the agent by following the steps in How do I select a specific agent to use for monitoring
